New Jersey Governor Proposes to Close 1 in 9 State Parks

Outdoor enthusiasts protested the New Jersey State house this past week in reaction to Governor Jon Corzine’s proposal to close 1 in 9 New Jersey State Parks. Corzine’s proposed closures of the parks are the Governor’s solution to solve the state’s budget crisis.Lawmakers will convene to vote on the proposal or vote to fund the parks program on July 1st. If the proposal is passed, then 80 park workers will be laid off in the middle of a busy outdoor season as well as 42 state parks being affected drastically by closures and hour reductions.

Here is a list of the parks proposed to close:

Monmmouth Battlefield State Park: Visitor Center, restrooms

Stephens State Park:  Camping.

High Point State Park;  Swimming, Camping, Interpretive center, Office closed. Trail access limited.
Brendan T. Byrne State Forest: Burlington County, camping, picnic area, Indian King    Tavern, office closed. Trail access limited.
Round Valley Recreation Area: Swimming, camping, Wallace House, office closed.

Parvin State Park: Swimming, camping, interpretive center, office closed.

Jenny Jump State Forest:  Warren County, Camping, office closed. Trail access limited.

Worthington State Forest: Camping, office closed. Trail access limited.

Fort Mott State Park:  Hancock House, historic sites, office closed. Access to ferry service open.
